Solo a ti.

SOME WORDS FOR MILA

We’ll leave early tomorrow, Neneng—just after dawn. We’ll take Queens Boulevard. We’ll see the Manhattan skyline in the sunny morning light, and I’ll admire your beautiful, angelic face. I’ll gaze at you with admiration as you rest, wearing those dark glasses that accentuate your beauty. We’ll cross the Queensboro Bridge, and you’ll remember the days when I used to arrive to start our long shifts in the ICU. Once across the bridge, we’ll turn south and continue along Second Avenue until we reach Canal Street. There, we’ll turn west, passing through Little Italy to the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. Then, we’ll look for the ramp to I-95 South, heading toward New Jersey. We’ll make the journey wrapped in our intense love. We’ll stop at one of our usual spots for a quick breakfast. Then you’ll take the wheel, since I’ll be sleepy after a long night shift in the hospital ER. You’ll drive with your characteristic boldness—swiftly. I know that even if I doze off, you’ll enter my dreams like a roaring torrent; a brilliant light will shine upon us, filling us with joy as we’re together, allowing me to gaze at you constantly—like never before. Neneng, you are so enchanting; the effect you have on me amazes me. With my eyes closed, I’ll feel the speed at which you drive. You change lanes abruptly, smiling as you do. My head jerks, waking me and making me irritable, but then I look at you; seeing your calm demeanor behind the wheel dissolves my irritation, and I settle down. Soon, I’m drifting back into sleep. I forgive you for everything, Mila. Only you. Even when you shoot me irritated glances without explaining the reason for your temper.  Because I know that in a few moments, you’ll be calm again—back to being the partner I’ve always known. When you get angry with others, you turn into a fierce tigress—but never with me. We are two soulmates who have found each other after a long time, keenly aware of each other's presence and nearly moved to tears when we must part to attend to our work duties. We will arrive at the Atlantic City hotel in the mid-afternoon. The Atlantic will be imposing. We will walk along the still-warm beach and through the foaming surf, feeling that life is truly worth living. How I wish those waves could last forever, to remind us of the love we share. Afterward, we will go to the restaurant you love so much, because you want to recapture the intense love you felt the first time we were there. If we don't go, you will become irritable; yet I will remain calm, knowing that within a few minutes you will settle down and soon be talking about Bacolod City. I hope this happiness lasts forever, Neneng. May it endure eternally—for if it doesn't, we will seek each other out and never stop searching, even if the loneliness without you lasts for centuries, because I firmly believe we will meet again.
